What role does CNC machining play in sheet metal working?

Sheet metal working involves cutting, shaping and joining sheet metal to produce finished components. Most sheet metal components are produced using laser cutting, pressing and welding.

However, not all requirements can be met using those methods. When a component requires greater precision than can be achieved through cutting and forming, CNC machining comes into play.

Sheet metal working creates the shape; CNC machining ensures the dimensions

Within sheet metal working The sheet metal is cut to the correct shape, formed to the correct angles and joined together to form a structure. This gives the component its basic shape.

CNC machining comes into play when certain parts of the component have more stringent requirements than that. This may involve dimensions that need to fit precisely against another component, or surfaces that need to be completely flat.

A complement, not a substitute

CNC machining does not replace laser cutting or stamping. Milling an entire component from a solid block takes considerably longer and uses more material than cutting and shaping sheet metal.

That is why the methods are used in combination. Sheet metal working produces the component quickly and in a material-efficient manner, whilst CNC machining takes care of the rest.

Not all sheet metal components need to be CNC-machined

Many components are ready immediately after laser cutting and press braking. If the tolerances specified in the drawing fall within the limits of these processes, there is no need for further machining.

CNC machining is only relevant when the requirements are more demanding, for example for components intended to act as fastenings, bearings or fittings within a larger structure.

The advantage of having everything in one place

When sheet metal working and CNC machining are carried out by the same supplier, the component does not need to be sent between different workshops. This results in fewer transport journeys and shorter lead times.

It also makes it easier to plan the entire manufacturing process, and there is one party responsible for ensuring that the component is correct.

CNC machining is used where precision is crucial

In sheet metal working, CNC machining has a clear role: to handle the dimensions and surfaces that other methods cannot achieve. It is used on components where precision determines whether the whole assembly functions correctly.

Do you need help with sheet metal working and CNC machining?

At Linde Maskiner, we specialise in both sheet metal working and CNC machining. Whether a component simply needs to be cut and shaped, or requires further finishing, we tailor the manufacturing process to the drawings and specifications. Contact us today, and we will help you further.
