What we often help customers with before laser cutting

Before a laser-cutting project gets underway, questions often arise regarding drawings, materials and how the part is to be manufactured. This is perfectly natural, and many of these questions can be clarified before production begins. 

Whether you have a finished drawing or just an initial idea, there is often a good basis on which to start discussing the project. 

The drawing does not need to be completely finished

Many people believe that everything must be fully designed before an enquiry can be sent. 

In practice, many projects begin with a drawing that is still being developed or a sketch illustrating the basic idea. It is often possible to start the dialogue at that stage and clarify any issues before the drawing is completely finalised. 

The most important thing is that there is something to build on, not that everything is finished. 

The choice of materials does not have to be decided from the outset

As the design begins to take shape, questions about the choice of materials often arise. 

It is not unusual for the choice of materials to remain open even as the design nears completion. Depending on how the component is to be used, different materials may be more or less suitable. 

In such cases, we usually discuss various options based on the project’s specific circumstances before planning the production. 

How the detail is to be used often influences the solution

Knowing how a component is to be used can provide valuable information early on in the project. 

This might, for example, involve the component being welded, assembled or further machined at a later stage. This sort of information makes it easier to take the entire manufacturing process into account right from the start. 

This doesn’t necessarily mean that everything is decided from the outset, but the more we know about how the component is to be used, the easier it will be to find a solution that suits the project. 

Many people wonder which manufacturing method is best suited

Laser cutting is a common method in sheet metal working, but it is not always the only solution. 

Depending on the design, material and volume of the component, different manufacturing methods may be appropriate. In some projects, laser cutting is the most suitable solution, whilst other components may need to be processed using, for example, press braking or other sheet metal working techniques.
